We all know how expensive horses can get, especially if they are well trained and experienced. But is it possible to buy a horse without spending your life savings? The answer is of course you can. In this post we will cover the best ways for you to get a horse that works for you and your budget.

The first way to get a horse cheap is by adopting one! There are countless horses all around the world that are up for adoption. Their prices usually rang between $200 and $3000 depending on the horses breed, size, age, health condition and possibley more. The hardest part about adopting a horse is that many rescues want to make sure that their horses will go to a home where they can get the care they need for the rest of their life. This means that many rescues will ask for pictures are even a tour of the place where the horse will be kept. This might seem a little extreme but it’s nothing to worry about. Just give them the whole truth and make sure that the area looks nice, and that there aren’t any things around that could possibly pose a threat to the horse. Remember that nearly all rescues will ask you to fill out an adoption application. This will help them figure out whether or not they think you would be a good owner for the horse that you are interested in. You may also be asked to have an interview with the rescue and/or ride the horse a couple of times before you adopt it. Something to keep in mind is that if you ever needed to sell the horse, some rescues will ask that you reach out to them so that they can take the horse in again. Although I this will most likely be the cheapest option on our list, it could be a little more complicated than our other options.

Our next option is to buy from a kill pen. These horses may be cheap because they have some kind of injury or disability or they are older. This is of course not always the case, but it is something to keep in mind. The easiest way to find a kill pen horse is to look on the kill pens Facebook page. This is where most kills pens will post their available horses as well as their price and the date that they will be shipped to the pen. ( if you are interested in a horse, be sure to reach out before this date) If you do purchase a horse from a kill pen be sure to quarantine it for a minimum of 30 days because the horses are kept in extremely cramped areas, and not cared for well. This means that the horses are much more likely to have a disease.

The last way to get a horse for cheap that we will be discussing today is checking Craigslist and Facebook for horses for sale in your area. Many people will simply list their horse on these sites because it’s the easiest option for them. This means that they will often be very cheap. This could also be good for your budget because you could try negotiating a new price. Just to be sure that when you visit the horse the owner allows you try ride it. If the owner doesn’t want you riding the horse it could mean that it doesn’t do well when it is being ridden.

Thank you so much for reading this post and supporting our local horse rescue.
